Rapid Review: Narcosis

Listen to the full discussion:

Platforms: Steam, Oculus, the Humble Store and Xbox One, with additional platforms to follow.  Reviewed On: Xbox One
Release Date: 05/09/2017
Reviewed By: Zen & Jen

Narcosis: Setting

Imagine you’re deep underwater in the Pacific, working in an underwater lab with a small crew. Suddenly, an event occurs and everything is unraveled.

Many of the underground structures are damaged or destroyed. It seems most of the crew has died in the accident. You’re trapped, wandering the seafloor in your suit. Your goal is to reach the surface via an escape pod.

Narcosis: Gameplay

You need to keep your oxygen levels in check by finding additional oxygen tanks. There is a limited supply of flares to light the way but you can find more. You are armed with a small utility knife that doesn't do a whole lot! Another factor to staying alive means that you must also survive the dangers that lurk near the dark seafloor. Unique creatures and fish are not always friendly. You must manage and monitor these things all while dealing with the stress and fear of realizing all of your friends and co-workers are gone.

Narcosis: Our Thoughts

Narcosis does a great job immersing you into the creepiness of the dark deep ocean. It really captures the feeling of being lost, desperate and scared. The fear that a sea creature might swim from the dark water and attack, creates tension. Eventually, you start fearing the possibility of what may happen next.

The story and voice acting were great. We will let you discover the story on your own but we enjoyed the ending a lot. The puzzles are a mix of easy and hard. A few places near the end of the game got a little confusing. Jen flailed around a long time and eventually figured things out, while Zen got some help from her friend YouTube.

Narcosis is marketed as a Survival Horror game but we didn’t find it super scary. There is just the right amount of jump-scares that it keeps you on alert. The creepy underwater setting paired with plenty of threats lends to a lot of suspense and thrills.

Narcosis is a great creepy game with a survival element. If you enjoyed games like, Layers of Fear, then Narcosis is a game we think you might enjoy.

Narcosis Score: Zen 9  |  Jen 10 | GTG Total = 9.5

Rapid Review: What Remains of Edith Finch

Listen to the full discussion:

BUY WHAT REMAINS OF EDITH FINCH

What Remains of Edith Finch is a first person experience, story based game. You play as Edith who is on a journey of discovering the history of her family and the tale that they are cursed. The story begins with Edith Finch returning to her childhood home. The home has a story to tell all on it’s own. Years ago the family left in a hurry and the home is starting to be taken back by nature. The rooms are still filled with the families things and gives you a sense of who they were. In and around the home Edith will discover journals mainly written by relatives with stories ranging from the early 1900s to the present day

The journals tell the stories of how they lost their lives through a short story. Each story is unique in it’s own way and are told in a range of different ways, for example with a comic book style approach, photograph, artwork, RPG style game, or a more general way of just experiencing life from that persons perspective. Most stories begin in the persons room, which is surrounded by items owned by that person, which give you a glimpse of their personality and hobbies.

What Remains of Edith Finch_20170426184612.jpg

What Remains of Edith Finch is mainly a story based game with no puzzles that you could get caught up on. The game does a nice job of pushing you along the way to progress the story. The art direction is beautiful, the voice acting is strong and for the most part the dialogue is solid. There are a few weak points in the dialogue and I found several stories forgettable.

All and all What Remains of Edith Finch was a joy to discover and makes you look at how fragile and amazing life can be. I love when games can make you stop and realize how to enjoy every moment in your life. If you like games like Gone Home, Blackwood Crossing, or Firewatch than this is a game for you.

Blackwood Crossing A Story Of Life, Love, and Loss.

Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
Reviewed On: Xbox One
Reviewed By: Zen

Listen to the full discussion:

Over the past few years the types of video games I enjoy has evolved. My love for emotional, story driven games has exceptionally grown. Blackwood Crossing is just what I was craving in a story driven game. In the experience you’ll uncover a story of life, love, and loss within a family and relationship between Finn and his older sister Scarlett. Finn is at the age of childhood make-believe and adventure. Finn is also struggling with a loss, a sense of blame and anger. Scarlett is at the age when she is trying to let go of her childhood ways, but is also trying to be there for her brother.

Blackwood Crossing is mainly a story/experience based game with simple puzzles. The puzzles are one element I really enjoyed in this game. In many story based games the puzzles feel forced and tedious. Most of the puzzles found in Blackwood Crossing made sense and help build the story.

The story takes places on a train, island, treehouse, and other places from Finn and Scarlett's childhood memories. There is also an element of magic that can undo the past and give life. The world is filled with mystery and symbolism that will leave you questioning the meaning even after you’ve completed the story. Right after I finished my first playthrough I wanted to go back and experience the story another time. The art directions, voice acting, animations, and dialogue are all fantastically done and make the story come to life.

The story brought me back to my childhood and the days when my sister and I would go on adventures in our backyard. The game made me stop and think about many other moments in my life and people I have lost. Even though the game touches on many sad subjects like death and siblings growing apart, it also brings to life all the joys of being a child, loving your family, and a sense of hope that even in death someone can live on with you through memories.

It’s a shorter game and only takes about 2.5-3 hours to complete, but will take several playthroughs to unlock all the achievements.

Blackwood Crossing is something special in the video game space and I hope we see more like it in the near future.

This highly fancied stealth-and-puzzle adventure from Swedish outfit Tarsier Studios has a very specific aesthetic and a vibe that would feel right at home in the dark, quirky mind of someone like Tim Burton.
