Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the more beautiful games I’ve played in a long time. Not only is it visually pleasing, but it’s well crafted, and delivers an intriguing world and story to uncover. In Horizon Zero Dawn you follow the journey of Aloy in a post-apocalyptic world where nature has reclaimed earth and humans have gone back to live a more primitive life. A wide range of animal-like machines roam the earth.
As Aloy, you will travel to many ruins and discover the history of the old world and the origins of the machines. A select group is also trying to harness a power from the old world and it’s up to Aloy to stop them. Horizon Zero Dawn uses elements found in games like Far Cry and new Tomb Raider games, but adds it’s own twist. Horizon Zero Dawn also added a few reaction choices similar to what you see in Mass Effect, but I don’t feel like they change the outcome.
To survive you’ll need to unlock skill points, buy new weapons, and various upgrades. The combat system is intuitive and taking down large machines is challenging and rewarding. The game leaves it up to you if you want to be stealthy or run in flinging arrows. Picking flowers in open world games seems to be pretty popular and to keep your health up you’ll be doing a ton of it.
The game will keep you entertained for hours from the main story, side missions, upgrading, searching for collectibles, and machine combat. Aloy has become one of my favorite lead females in a video game. She is strong, smart, compassionate, and a joy to play as. Horizon Zero Dawn uses elements found in many games, but it's presented in a way that just might make this my game of the year! I have many more hours to play in Horizon Zero Dawn, but at this moment I’d give it a 9.
